A New Commodity – Carbon Offsets

Carbon Dioxide is the principle greenhouse gas, so people commonly talk about carbon when discussing greenhouse gases. Carbon reductions (widely known as carbon credits) occur when carbon is removed from the atmosphere or by providing clean energy. A carbon offset is the measurement of the amount of carbon reduced in tonnes (ie. 1 carbon offset = 1 tonne of carbon reduced). There are a number of different types of carbon offsets ranging in both price and quality.

All legitimate carbon projects must be:

• Additional - reduce emissions that would not have occurred if business continued as usual
• Measurable - third party verified reductions that can be accurately and fully measured
• Permanent - reductions must indefinitely reduce or prevent emissions
